産業革命の過程の逆回し
イギリスでの青年達の暴動を見て思う。文明の終わりがやってきた。産業革命を起こしたイギリスで、その産業が空洞化してしまえば、仕事はなくなり、また「王子と乞食」の時代のような貧困層が大量に発生して不思議はない。先進国は今、産業革命の過程を逆回ししているのだ。福祉も削減されるだろう。
１８世紀以来の「進歩」を支えてきた舞台装置――自由と人権と福祉によって支えられた市民社会、そしてそれら全てを守ってきた「国民国家」――が賞味期限と言うか、産業空洞化で経済的な基盤を失ってしまったのだ。福祉を十分提供できない政府は、不満の表明と反抗を力で抑えつける暴力装置に突如として化する。
嫌な時代になったものだ。いいことだけ味わえる世代というのは、滅多にない。と言うか、多分絶対にないのだな。
