Fiscal cliff? But there will be no apocalypse with the American defense budget
The "fiscal cliff" is approaching and if the U.S. ever leaps from it, the defense budget will have to be cut by whopping 9%, that is about 55 billion dollars.
Therefore, some pundits already kindly predict an apocalypse of the American defense budget and accordingly the end of the American commitments in the world. But will it be the case?
No, those views are bloated too much. The U.S. defense budget even without the expenditure on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has grown so much (in 2000~2012 it has grown 70% and reached 530 billion dollars) that a 9% reduction would not be fatal.
Besides, the additional special expenditure for the war in Afghanistan is about 50 billion dollars in 2013.
So, the leeway for budget cuts is rather big. We will never witness such a situation where a U.S. aircraft carrier halts on the sea, running out of gas (or uranium). The U.S.strategy should not be built upon doomsayers' malevolence.
